Safe Schools, Safe Kids
Participants reflect on their own school’s issues and explore the impact of implementing a schoolwide approach that fosters a more inclusive campus climate, as well as increases student interest in learning. This presentation offers a review of the research illustrating that students who are in a caring environment—which meets their needs for autonomy, belonging, and competence—build an attachment to school and a renewed desire to learn and improve their academic achievement. Using observational video, participants will explore classroom and schoolwide practices that improve school climate, change the relationships between older and younger students on campus, and engage families in a new way.

Shouldn’t They Already Know How to Read?
Participants realize that whether their students are struggling readers or members of a book club, they can all benefit from learning the comprehension strategies that good readers use. Learning how to think and talk about ideas in books as a way of deepening their understanding will increase student achievement. This session provides a lesson framework for teaching comprehension strategies using fiction and nonfiction read-alouds that engage young adolescents and get them thinking and talking about text and ultimately learning to make sense of the books that they read on their own. The strategies offered in this workshop are especially beneficial to and important for students who have limited success and experiences with reading grade-appropriate texts.

Lesson Study: Crafting Learning Together
This session introduces participants to lesson study, a model of professional development used widely in schools in Japan and on a limited basis in the United States primarily in math and science. Those attending this session will hear how using lesson study helped build a strong professional learning community, significantly improve instruction, and ultimately transform an urban struggling school. Through lesson study, teachers learn to make student learning the heart of all discussions and the basis for making decisions. Participants in this session will experience lesson study by viewing and discussing video examples showing teachers and students participating in the process.

Using Literature to Teach Reading, Writing, and Values
Participants will explore a focused use of read-alouds combined with structured partner work to explicitly teach comprehension strategies in reading and genre study and author’s craft in writing. Classroom video and modeled lessons will be used to demonstrate ways to use authentic fiction and expository texts to motivate and teach students to think, talk, listen, read and write in ways that foster pro-social development.
